Music industry offers deal to small Webcasters Group says "small" Webcasters can escape fee hikes, but Net radio operators attack offer as a ploy to stunt the medium's growth.
Like a finely tuned laser, FreeRip 3 does one task: extract songs from your CDs. Fortunately, the app accomplishes its goals accurately, if not with flair, and makes for an easy-to-use audio-track ripper. The latest version of the program features some long overdue enhancements. Chief among them is the inclusion of the WMA format, and it's hard to believe it wasn't included before. FreeRip also supports WAV, MP3, Vorbis, and FLAC. Other features include multitrack ripping and an option to use the program as an audio-file converter. The options menu is extensive and will appeal to any advanced user, since it makes most manners of customization a cinch. The interface is well done, with big icons and a friendly main window split into two sections. The left pane lists the tracks, and the right gives you specific info on each song and has a tab to switch to CD-wide info. The toolbar has icons for all the major functions of the app as well as links to the publisher's community pages. In the end, FreeRip doesn't do anything its competitors don't, but it functions well, is uncomplicated and quick, and has no price tag.
As celebrated trailblazers of orchestral pop, XTC is responsible for some of the most endearingly catchy and adventurous pop music of the last 30 years. Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, however, haven't slowed down; the songwriting duo continues to craft potent material, as evidenced by the wealth of music packed into their 2005 release "Apple Box".
Saturday was hands down the best day to catch some great hip-hop shows in Austin. After catching The Good, The Bad and The Queen for a few songs at The Fader party, I rushed over to the Rakim show. Although I missed Ghostface, and I heard he completely killed it with members of the Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra as the backing band, I was completely satisfied with Rakim’s set. I’ve seen Rakim live a few times, and he usually raps over his own instrumentals, which include annoying backing vocals. This was the first time I’ve actually heard Rakim tear it up without the additional vocals, and the band was sick! You truly had to be there to witness how the band rocked instrumentals of Follow The Leader, I Know You Got Soul, I Ain’t No Joke, Eric B Is President, and Don’t Sweat The Technique, to name a few. After the Rakim show, I headed back to the Fader party, where DJ A-Trak was killin’ the selections with some dope Dilla produced tracks in between bands. But the wait was all about Reggie Noble, aka Redman, and he did not disappoint. He entertained the crowd throughout his show, even had the room chanting the release date of his album (smart man), and singing Method Man’s verses while waiting for his turn to tear it up. Of course, he also played a few tracks from his upcoming release Red Gone Wild which sounds like a classic in the making.
Clock Radio: I don’t know, I just feel so…so…useless. Redundant. It’s like nobody really wants me any more.
Psychiatrist: I see.
Clock Radio: I mean, why would they? It’s not like I can compete with something like the Buslink MC-518 MP3 Radio. It’s got a clock and an alarm like I do, and AM/FM radio – plus you can hook your MP3 player up to it, or play audio CDs, or even MP3 CDs.
Psychiatrist: That’s interesting.
Clock Radio: As if that wasn’t bad enough, it can rip MP3s from CD or radio directly onto an MMC/SD card or a USB MP3
player. It doesn’t even have buttons, just fancy touchscreen controls. The damn thing makes it all seem so effortless. Meanwhile I’m
busting my hump just to pull in a listenable radio signal. It’s not
fair.
Psychiatrist: Hmmm. Go on.
Clock Radio:
And here’s the real kick in the teeth: the Buslink MC-518 pumps out 30
watts of sound, with a built-in subwoofer. A subwoofer! I’m no fool. I
know my days are numbered.
Psychiatrist: Maybe. Maybe not.
Clock Radio: How can you say that? Soon I’ll have to sell myself at a loss just to find work. It’s hopeless. I’ve got no future.
Psychiatrist: I think there’s one thing you’re forgetting.
Clock Radio: What?
Psychiatrist:
Nostalgia. If you can hang on for a few lean years, I bet you’ll find
yourself back in demand. It won’t matter to the hipsters and yuppies of
tomorrow that you don’t have much in the way of features – all they’ll
care about is that you remind them of the clock radio in their parents’
bedroom. Just remember the four stages of product life: novelty,
ubiquity, obsolescence, and retro.
Clock Radio: Hey, you’re right. I’ll be retro someday! Whoa! Listen, is there anything else I can do to enhance my retro appeal?
Psychiatrist: Have you considered covering yourself in Masters of the Universe decals?
