Like a finely tuned laser, FreeRip 3 does one task: extract songs from your CDs. Fortunately, the app accomplishes its goals accurately, if not with flair, and makes for an easy-to-use audio-track ripper.

The latest version of the program features some long overdue enhancements. Chief among them is the inclusion of the WMA format, and it's hard to believe it wasn't included before. FreeRip also supports WAV, MP3, Vorbis, and FLAC. Other features include multitrack ripping and an option to use the program as an audio-file converter. The options menu is extensive and will appeal to any advanced user, since it makes most manners of customization a cinch.

The interface is well done, with big icons and a friendly main window split into two sections. The left pane lists the tracks, and the right gives you specific info on each song and has a tab to switch to CD-wide info. The toolbar has icons for all the major functions of the app as well as links to the publisher's community pages. In the end, FreeRip doesn't do anything its competitors don't, but it functions well, is uncomplicated and quick, and has no price tag.

10cc Groovy Kind of Love song

As celebrated trailblazers of orchestral pop, XTC is responsible for some of the most endearingly catchy and adventurous pop music of the last 30 years. Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, however, haven't slowed down; the songwriting duo continues to craft potent material, as evidenced by the wealth of music packed into their 2005 release "Apple Box".

Saturday was hands down the best day to catch some great hip-hop shows in Austin. After catching The Good, The Bad and The Queen for a few songs at The Fader party, I rushed over to the Rakim show. Although I missed Ghostface, and I heard he completely killed it with members of the Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra as the backing band, I was completely satisfied with Rakim’s set. I’ve seen Rakim live a few times, and he usually raps over his own instrumentals, which include annoying backing vocals. This was the first time I’ve actually heard Rakim tear it up without the additional vocals, and the band was sick! You truly had to be there to witness how the band rocked instrumentals of Follow The Leader, I Know You Got Soul, I Ain’t No Joke, Eric B Is President, and Don’t Sweat The Technique, to name a few.

After the Rakim show, I headed back to the Fader party, where DJ A-Trak was killin’ the selections with some dope Dilla produced tracks in between bands. But the wait was all about Reggie Noble, aka Redman, and he did not disappoint. He entertained the crowd throughout his show, even had the room chanting the release date of his album (smart man), and singing Method Man’s verses while waiting for his turn to tear it up. Of course, he also played a few tracks from his upcoming release Red Gone Wild which sounds like a classic in the making.

'Gee, I'm Glad It's Raining,' Jim Varney
From the 1987 movie 'Ernest Goes to Camp'

In 1987, a 6-year-old Vince could not begin to grasp the emotional wallop that 'Gee, I'm Glad It's Raining' contained in the cinematic masterpiece that was 'Ernest Goes to Camp.' Young me did not have the life experience under his belt to appreciate when Ernest P. Worell belted that tune just as it seemed that he had failed in his effort to save camp from the evil mining corporation.

Fast forward to 2007, Ernest, a.k.a. Jim Varney, has passed on to that great camp/jail/Christmas saving cloud in the sky, but 'Gee, I'm Glad It's Raining' is as tear inducing as ever.

Of Montreal Have No Comment on Outback Steakhouse

Posted May 25th 2007 1:00PM by Mike Spinella
Filed under: MP3, Podcast, The Interface, Exclusive
When of Montreal's Kevin Barnes and Bryan Poole talked to the Interface, they had no qualms about discussing their nude photos, their distaste for fast food and they even made up a story about borrowing guitars to perform that day. What they didn't want to talk about was their Outback steakhouse jingle. Barnes told Spinner, "I'm not allowed to talk about it. There is nothing I can say that would be permissible."

Kiss Want Fans to Eat at Their Table

Gene Simmons has always exhibited a remarkable degree of insight in his marketing of the Kiss brand name -- a prescience he hasn't extended to his choices in artificial scalp cover, which is another matter altogether, but we digress.

But even the Bat Lizard's impressive track record couldn't prepare us for his latest effort -- a Kiss-themed item that manages to qualify as both home furnishing and dietary supplement.

Most Monumental Album Flops: No. 25

Posted May 24th 2007 5:00PM by Spinner Staff
Filed under: The Hit List
Failure, it has been argued, is more interesting than success. Try telling that to the superstars on our list of all-time album flops: We'd guess they were a tad more interested in the successes. You have to rise pretty high to have a stomach-turning letdown, which is why our list includes the creators of some of the biggest-selling albums of all time. From a Prince, several princesses and a King (of Pop) to the reigning jesters of punk and hip-hop, rock's royal court is clearly subject to the same laws of gravity as the rest of us.

'Pop'
U2, 1997

Rise: Ten years after U2 assumed the rock 'n' roll throne, they planned the glitzy Popmart tour as an ironic take on consumerism, and they rushed out the accompanying album to meet the deadline.

Fall: The half-baked 'Pop' was so forgettable that U2's next album, 'All That You Can't Leave Behind,' was widely hailed as the band's "comeback" record.

Stats: 'The Joshua Tree' (1987), 10 million; 'Pop,' 1.5 million

IFLTS: 'F*** the Police,' J Dilla

'F*** the Police,' J Dilla
A single from 2001

First things first: This is NOT a cover of the infamous N.W.A. tune. Now, on with it.

I'm well aware that this song choice might prompt a few eye rolls, be that it's coming from a white, 20-year-old NYU student. My experiences are nothing like Dilla's. Running from the police after a kegger isn't exactly a war story. But that's irrelevant. Dilla gives each of us permission to relate with the these words: "It's for you."

Bid on Neko Case's Bustier

Neko Case is probably sick to death of hearing how she's the "sexiest babe of indie rock," but quite frankly, it's true. The flame-haired hottie sexed it up Bettie Page-style for a 1999 pin-up calendar, and now photographer Victoria Renard is auctioning off the black bustier Case wore for the sizzling shot.

Green Day Resurrect John Lennon for 'Idol'

Posted May 24th 2007 11:00AM by Jessica Robertson
Filed under: News, TV, OMG!
Speaking of irony, Green Day went from 'American Idiot' to 'American Idol' Wednesday night with a surprise -- though widely rumored -- performance on the latter's season finale. While the punk vets' appearance seems to negate their anti-capitalism sentiments, Billie Joe and Co. will do whatever the hell they want, thank you very much. Especially if it means abandoning their proverbial soap box for a good cause.

UNKLE Declare 'War' on New Album

Posted May 24th 2007 10:00AM by Jolie Lash
Filed under: News, Album, Exclusive
Two years in the making, James Lavelle is finally ready to release his third UNKLE album, 'War Stories,' next month.

Recorded with production partner Richard File in the Southern California desert studio of Chris Goss, the release features a very Queens of the Stone Age-influenced cast. For starters, there's Goss, who's previously produced the Queens, the Duke Spirit, who are currently being produced by Goss and there is QOTSA frontman Josh Homme, who lends his tender pipes to new cut 'Restless.' "I met Josh in London at a Queens gig 'cause I was a fan," Lavelle tells Spinner. "They were very, very welcoming. We've always got on really well."
